Update: River Test flows and the possible need for a drought permit

In August we announced the possible need for a drought permit for the River Test to allow us to continue abstracting water to supply our customers while protecting the river and environment.

The River Test catchment received approximately 175% of long term average rainfall for the month of August, mostly in the last two weeks.

This removed the previous need to submit the drought permit application in August and, the river flow has held up through September to date such that the risk of needing to apply has now moved into the second half of October.

Of course this can change depending on the weather, so we’ll continue to review river flows and forecasts.

If a permit is approved, we then must take the decision if and when we need to implement it. This means we would also be asking our customers to be extra vigilant with their water use.

Temporary Use Bans – previously known as hosepipe bans – may need to be imposed in advance of a permit application and/or after its implementation if a permit is granted.

We know this may be disruptive but we thank all for their understanding, patience and we will continue to update our customers.
