Gaining knowledge about engineering through an apprenticeship

February 2023

Matthew’s apprenticeship has helped him learn about different engineering disciplines

“Joining a water company gives you the chance to learn to work on a variety of different types of equipment, sharpening your skills, knowledge and understanding of not only the water industry, but other engineering disciplines along the way too.”

I found the apprenticeship through an employee that already worked for Southern Water. The experience has improved my knowledge and understanding of different engineering disciplines, how things work and the science behind them.

I’ve been carrying out maintenance and repairs to electrical and mechanical assets. The variety of different applications for knowledge, as well as working in different locations and learning new subjects, means that every day is different. This keeps each week interesting.

I’ve always been interested in engineering and wanted to better myself, by getting a qualification and advancing my career. I also wanted to provide myself with a better future, a more secure job position and a better financial situation in the end. I hope to progress through my career learning anything and everything I can, gaining knowledge, and possibly in the future helping train future engineers.

My message to anyone who may be around my age would be not to shy away from an apprenticeship. It can be difficult but the positives definitely out way the negatives.
