Septic tanks and cesspits
Some of our customers are unable to connect to our sewerage system and dispose of their wastewater either through a cesspit or septic tank. These systems are defined below.
Septic tanks
A septic tank is a settlement chamber, which provides treatment to sewage and drainage waters. Overflow from the tank goes to a soakaway or drainage field.
Householders operating them are responsible for the operation, maintenance and occasional emptying of the chamber.
Currently the Environment Agency and the Government are undertaking a joint review with the Government on the requirement to register small domestic sewage discharges in England.
Cesspits
A cesspit is a sealed tank having no outlet and used for the storage of sewage. The cesspool must be emptied regularly. These will not have to be registered.
Emptying tanks
We do not provide an emptying service. These are provided by private contractors who are licensed to dispose of domestic waste at our specialized wastewater treatment sites across our region.
